The Boston Celtics may have lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals recently, but it would be hard to argue that they didn’t have one of the most successful seasons in recent memory. Even though the franchise seems to be headed back in the right direction once again, the Celtics have a lot of unanswered questions moving forward.
Not only are three of the Boston Celtics most important players in Rasheed Wallace, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce possibly on their way out via free agency or retirement, but head coach Doc Rivers is also still uncertain about his future with the team.
Ray Allen will become a free agent on July 1st and the Celtics seem interested in re-signing him to a one or two year deal, but Allen might get some much more lucrative offers from the New York Knicks or the Chicago Bulls.
Paul Pierce can opt out of his contract this summer, but with $21.5 million dollars to be made next season, I am betting he will stay in Boston as no other team in the league is going to be able to offer more than that.
Rasheed Wallace on the other hand seems destine for retirement as both Doc Rivers and All-Star forward Kevin Garnett have said that they believe he has played his last game in the NBA. Not only was Wallace crushed by the loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in game seven of the NBA Finals, but he just seemed tired and fed up as he was battling noticeably painful back problems throughout the late rounds of the playoffs.
Then there is head coach Doc Rivers who absolutely loves coaching the Boston Celtics and loves his players, but is at that point in his career where spending time with his family could mean much more to him than continuing his coaching career in Boston.
The head coach is still very much up in the air about his future with the Boston Celtics, but I believe he will ultimately call it quits unless his players can convince him to do otherwise before next season.
